The Art Collector IG Attention Report

Art collecting and social media are inseparable in today’s art ecosystem. When an art collector likes, follows, or shares about an artist’s post on Instagram, what influence does it have on the artist in the art market?

To investigate the connection between art collector and artist on Instagram, LARRY’S LIST has teamed up with NAMAC to deliver The Art Collector Instagram Attention Report, combining LARRY’S LIST’s knowledge of art collectors with the scientific data research capabilities of NAMAC.

The aim is to investigate the relationship between a defined group of over 1,000+ contemporary art collectors and 100 artists born after 1970 and active on Instagram to reveal any trends related to the amount of attention received by artists from art collectors on the platform. The main inquiry, as such, is “Which artists are receiving the most attention on Instagram from the art collector community?” After exploring this concept from a global perspective, the analysis is then broken down to major regional art markets, specifically the US, Greater China, and the UK. The apparent trends are analysed – what do all the top attention-receiving artists have in common? – and then the similarities and differences across the regional markets are explored. Finally, the report discusses the possibilities that such research may hold beyond this report for different players in the global art market.

Key Findings:

–    Seven out of the top ten attention-receiving artists are from the United States.
–    Nine out of the global top ten artists analysed produce paintings.
–    The majority of the global top attention receivers have more than 50k Instagram                        followers.
