With the highest number of private art museums in the world, globally recognized art fairs, and artists demanded all over the world, Korea is a globally influential center of contemporary art.
From May 6 to 10, Sotheby’s Institute of Art and LARRY’S LIST are hosting a 5-day study tour to explore the cities of Seoul and Busan, offering a deep dive into the region’s art scene and culture, and focusing on contemporary art and its market. The tour will offer opportunities to meet the pillars of the Korean art landscape, including founders, curators and professionals, enjoy VIP access to Art Busan Fair, the most important art fair on the south coast of Korea, and visit leading museum collections, such as Leeum Museum in Seoul. With course leaders, Yulhee Kim, advisor and Artforum contributor for the Korean art setting, and LARRY’S LIST co-founder Christoph Noe, on-site expertise guidance is guaranteed.

Day 1
Discover the Korean art ecosystem by delving into its prominent galleries, auction houses, art fairs, museums, and collectors for a rich understanding of this dynamic region, and dive into its contemporary market with a special visit to Choi Jeong Hwa’s studio.

Day 2
Join a private tour at Leeum Museum of Art, one of the most beautiful art museums in Asia, designed by world-renowned architects, and a testament to Samsung’s family legacy across generations. Meet art professionals at Gallery Baton and Myung hee Oh studio, and network with major Korean art collectors during a private dinner.

Day 3
Learn more about the permanent collection and the current exhibition of Jung Younsun at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art with a dedicated tour accompanied by the curator.  Continue your exploration of the Korean art world by immersing yourself in the artworks at Gallery Hyundai and PKM Gallery, followed by a visit to Kwon Jin-Kyu’s atelier.

Day 4
Find more contemporary art by attending the VIP opening at the Art Busan fair. With leading galleries from Korea and overseas, as Opera Gallery, this is one of the top premier art fairs in the region, attracting each year international attention and collectors globally.

Day 5
Experience the vibrant world of monochrome paintings by Lee Ufan at the Busan Museum of Art, where a special lecture by the director will enrich your knowledge of the artist’s vision and life story. Continue your exploration of the city with a visit to Johyn Gallery, one of the most prestigious and oldest galleries in Busan, before visiting the private home of a young private art collector. Finish the trip by learning more cases on how Korean corporates contribute to cultural development, such as Hyundai Motor LAB, renowned for sponsoring Tate Modern.
