The Peninsula is reintroducing its “Art in Resonance” program during Hong Kong Art Week, showcasing newly commissioned works by artists Kingsley Ng and Lachlan Turczan at its flagship Hong Kong location, alongside existing collection pieces, starting in late March. This program, first launched in 2019 in partnership with cultural advisors Isolde Brielmaier and Bettina Prentice, has been praised for creating immersive experiences that support emerging artists and the cultural ecosystem by offering funding, curatorial support, and logistical help for new public artworks. Gareth Roberts, Deputy Chief Operating Officer of The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited, The Peninsula’s parent company, expressed excitement about the program’s return, “We are thrilled to bring back Art in Resonance, which has allowed our guests to engage with some of the world’s most innovative artistic minds.” The program runs from late March through mid-May 2024 and is open to all members of the public.

The exhibition comprises an engaging collection of art, beginning with Kingsley Ng’s monumental sculpture, Esmeralda, floating above the hotel’s façade, embodying a dialogue between gravity and air, and named after a locale from Italo Calvino’s ‘Invisible Cities’, symbolizing its conversation with Hong Kong. Lachlan Turczan’s Harmonic Resonance, a kinetic sculpture exploring visible sound through a parabolic mirror and infrasonic tones, will mesmerize guests by creating oscillating patterns in a water pool, demonstrating the physicality of sound. Additionally, the exhibition is enriched by Elise Morin’s SOLI, a reflective commentary on material consumption through 4,000 crushed CDs forming a sea-like sculpture, and Saya Woolfalk’s Visionary Reality Portal, a digital meditation space that invites viewers into a kaleidoscopic world of contemplation.

The inclusion of works by Morin and Woolfalk, who have expanded their pieces specifically for this Hong Kong showing, underscores the Art in Resonance program’s commitment to artistic evolution and dialogue. Co-curator Bettina Prentice emphasizes the program’s dedication to providing artists the freedom to adapt and grow their ideas, highlighting the dynamic and thought-provoking nature of the exhibition. This initiative not only showcases cutting-edge art but also reflects The Peninsula’s role in facilitating a platform where art continually interacts with and reflects upon its environment.

The Peninsula actively promotes the cultural vibrancy of its properties’ destination cities, inviting guests to immerse in art via artist residencies, exhibits, talks, artists studio visits and workshops, aiming to highlight local talent and the unique essence of each destination. “Working with The Peninsula has been an extraordinary experience for me, and to showcase my work to viewers in my cherished home city,” said Kingsley Ng.

The “Art in Resonance” exhibition will stay at The Peninsula Hong Kong until May 17, before moving to other locations within the Peninsula portfolio. During the exhibition, visitors will enjoy free access to the artworks, along with guided tours and curated experiences, celebrating both the artists and Hong Kong’s cultural vitality.
