Craft-based art project “Against All Odds: The Korail Chronicles” by the artist Suborna Morsheada is in the spotlight this week at the Grand Palais in Paris as part of the Bangladesh Banquet on the occasion of Révélations International Fine Craft & Creation Biennial, happening from May 21 to 25.

Supported by Durjoy Bangladesh Foundation (DBF) this multifaceted work brings the vibrant spirit of Dhaka’s Korail slum to the international art scene.  Challenging the conventional narratives about slum communities, the work shifts the focus from deprivation to the strength, creativity, and hope that define the people of Korail.

By merging traditional Bengali craft techniques with contemporary artistic forms, the artist transforms recycled materials, such as discarded plastics, fabric remnants, and scrap metals into powerful artworks.

Korail, nestled between Dhaka’s affluent neighbourhoods, is often overshadowed by its challenges. Yet, within its confines lies a community pulsating with ingenuity and hope. Against All Odds captures this essence, presenting evocative artworks that narrate tales of perseverance and dreams.

Morsheada’s installations, such as “The Phoenix of Renewal”, “Quilts of Resilience”, and “Threads of Hope”, delve deep into themes of transformation, daily life, and aspirations. Each piece, rooted in traditional Bengali craft techniques, challenges prevailing perceptions of slum communities, highlighting the strength and creativity inherent in Korail’s residents.
