Countless art businesses are thinking outside the (white) box to promote and showcase contemporary art. There has been a great surge of online art market startups providing a vast array of services from online auctions, artwork sales, artist information through interviews as well as art market news. Paddle8, Artsy, Auctionata are among the many Western art market startups providing such services who are still growing strong.

Larry’s List decided to investigate in finding the top innovative art market startups in Asia, every art collector should know.

Artshare.com, launched in April 2013, is a premier online platform dedicated to Chinese contemporary art, focusing on selling unique works of art through curated exhibitions, and providing exclusive educational content to its audience through written and video interviews. Each online exhibition presents about 15 artworks, across mediums, selected by an influential curator and available for sale.

ArtJeff We Chat Auction is an auction model based on social relations on the mobile application WeChat (the most popular Chinese messaging phone app), founded by Hu Hu in February 2014. Through the influence of the well-known We-media brand “ArtJeff”, Hu established ‘ArtJeff Day and Evening Sale’ WeChat auction group. The auction in the group-chat runs day and night, selling quality contemporary art works, including works from Chinese, Japanese and Western artists. Targeted towards those who have art trade needs in social media, it is an ideal communication tool for sending and receiving pictures as well as an excellent promotional channel for art provided by the WeChat’s Official Accounts and Moments function.

On September 17th 2014, the total turnover of ‘ArtJeff WeChat Auction’ reached 8 million RMB. Towards the end of 2014, the annual final turnover was 10.45 million RMB. With more than 800 lots traded, the turnover rate was 95% (unreserved auction) with 5 to 8 pieces sold mostly every day.

Art Loft is an online art sales and rental site focusing on emerging contemporary artists from South East Asia selling works for under USD10,000. Co-founded by Michelle Chan, Alexandra Eu and Tian Qiuyan, the works are sourced primarily from the artists and galleries from Singapore, Myanmar, Japan and the Philippines. The website partners with the right businesses to showcase the works while also connecting “artists and collectors on global professional and personal levels.” Art Loft also provides an educational feature offering collectors in depth profiles of artists along with studio visit-style editorials.
