A Decade of Record-Breaking with Poly Auction Hong Kong

Poly Auction Hong Kong concluded the year of 2021 with great success at the joint auctions with Phillips in the fall auction season with a total of HKD 607 million fetched in the sale. Their 20th century and contemporary art and design sales in November presented a combination of quality Eastern and Western artworks by both emerging artists and contemporary masters was staged (see previous coverage here). The sales marked the auction records 15 artists while Izumi Kato’s records were broken twice on the day and evening sale, led by the highest of the sale — Gerhard Richter’s Candle-light (1984) for HK $102 million (US $13 million).

Such success is not spontaneous but the result of years of efforts and expertise. Throughout the past decade, Poly Auction Hong Kong has made a range of auction records since its debut in 2012.
In 2018, Zao Wou-Ki’s large-scale painting “Et la terre était sans forme” was sold for HK$ 183 million, setting a new auction record within Zao’s ‘oracle-bone period’, and is ranked as the third-highest auction sales record for Zao’s work.

In 2019, Yoshitomo Nara’s museum-grade installation masterpieces “Not Everything but/Green House” and “Not Everything but/Orange House” were sold for a combined total of HK$ 40.12 million record for the artist’s three-dimensional work.
The 20th Century & Contemporary Art Sale presented by Poly Auction in association with Phillips in June 2021 broke auction records for 17 renowned artists, including Emily Mae Smith, Loie Hollowell, Salman Toor, Jadé Fadojutimi, Bernard Frize, Ayako Rokkaku, Sanya Kantarovsky and teamLab.
The sale of Yoshitomo Nara’s “Berlin Barack, Room 1” in the Spring Auctions 2021 set a world auction record for the artist’s installation work and the third highest auction price of the artist.
