This week, Limassol welcomes the inaugural edition of VIMA Art Fair, Cyprus’s first-ever international contemporary art fair, from 16–18 May 2025. With 27 galleries and over 100 artists from more than 20 countries, VIMA is not just an art fair—it’s a cultural happening that positions Cyprus as a vital new link between Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
Set against the stunning backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea, The Warehouse by IT Quarter provides the perfect setting—an industrial-chic space right on the water, where visitors can soak in cutting-edge art and creative energy in a laid-back, sun-drenched atmosphere.
“VIMA”, meaning both “step” and “platform” in Greek, signals a bold step forward for the region. More than a marketplace, the fair seeks to build enduring bridges of artistic dialogue, with a rich public and parallel program spanning talks, tours, performances, and citywide exhibitions across Limassol and Nicosia.
LARRY’S LIST highlights 6 reasons why VIMA is the next fair to watch:
A Historic First for Cyprus
With its unique geographic location at the intersection of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, Cyprus has long been a cultural crossroads. Now, with VIMA, the island positions itself on the global art map—offering new connections between regional ecosystems and the international contemporary art world.
A Curated Global Gallery Roaster
VIMA brings together 27 galleries from Cyprus, Greece, Lebanon, the UAE, Nigeria, the UK, Georgia, Azerbaijan, the Netherlands, the USA, France, and beyond. This diversity offers visitors an exceptional panorama of artistic practices—from blue-chip names to bold emerging voices. Expect standout booths from The Breeder (Athens), Tiwani Contemporary (London/Lagos), The Third Line (Dubai), Fragment (New York), and Galerie Tanit (Beirut/Munich), among many others.
A Poetic Curatorial Project: The Posterity of the Sun
Curated by Ludovic Delalande, The Posterity of the Sun is a large-scale exhibition staged amid the ruins of Limassol’s industrial coastline. Featuring 17 artists and one writer, the show explores the emotional, environmental, and symbolic weight of the sun. Artists include Majd Abdel Hamid, Monia Ben Hamouda, Simone Fattal, Christodoulos Panayiotou, Maria Toumazou, and more—each contributing to a collective meditation on light, loss, resilience, and utopia. Writer Karim Kattan’s contribution was created during a residency in Nicosia, further grounding the project in the island’s cultural landscape.
An Engaging Public Program
Whether you’re a seasoned collector or just discovering contemporary art for the first time, VIMA’s public program is designed to be open, inviting, and rich with experiences, including talks on contemporary practices and regional cultural dynamics, live acts and performances, music events and guided tours.
City-Wide Cultural Celebrations
VIMA isn’t just about what’s on the walls. The VIP Programme offers access to a curated selection of private exhibition previews, guided tours, and cultural visits across Limassol and Nicosia. Guests will enjoy early entry to VIMA’s exhibitions with personal curator-led walkthroughs, as well as behind-the-scenes experiences at prominent galleries, private collections, and historical landmarks. With seamless transfers, receptions, and gatherings, the programme fosters connections among collectors, artists, and cultural leaders.
A Platform for Artistic and Cultural Exchange
VIMA aspires to build bridges between Cyprus and neighbouring regions, offering an inclusive and accessible platform for cultural dialogue and artistic collaboration. . Expect connections to form not just between artworks and collectors, but between ideas, communities, and regions.
