The past Sunday in Hong Kong, Phillips’ Evening Sale of 20th Century & Contemporary Art & Design achieved a sale of HK$119,840,000 (US$15,351,504). Participation in the sale includes bidders from 34 countries from all corners of the world. The sale set new auction records for George Condo, Henry Moore, Wolfgang Tillmans, George Baselitz and Shara Hughes at auctions in Asia.
George Condo’s “Girl with Blue Dress” led the sale and was sold to an Asian private collector for HK$12,100,000. Works of various artists significantly exceeded their estimates, such as emerging artist Shara Hughes and forefather of Pop Art Roy Lichtenstein. The majority of lots of Design also soared above their high estimates.
The strong results of the sale demonstrate the success of Phillips’ pioneering and innovative strategy of offering the very best works by international artists at auction in Asia. In only three seasons since the inaugural sale of the 20th Century & Contemporary Art & Design in Hong Kong, the notable increase in Asian participation reaffirms Phillips’ expanding presence and growth across the region, whilst confirming the Asian appetite for internationals works of art and design.
Larry’s List presents six of the top lots from the sale and would like to invite you to consign with Phillips for its next auction of 20th century & contemporary art and design in spring 2018.
