The Voice of Institutions in the Wave of Openings: Iris Art Museum

From 2022 to 2023, following the previous “ART INSIGHTS—China on Focus” series, LARRY’S LIST once again collaborates with CUPPAR to launch this new series “The Voice of Institutions in the Wave of Openings”, which focused on young private art museums in China opened in recent years. This aims to jointly present diverse topics in the Chinese contemporary art world from the perspectives of three different contemporary art institutions.

In 2023, the contemporary art scene in China witnesses a long-awaited resurgence, marking the second peak since the “wave of openings” of private art museums nearly a decade ago. The revival of contemporary art spaces in the Chinese context is officially underway. Leveraging the accumulation of private collections and the multifaceted innovation of institutions over three years or even longer, the local context of each city intertwines with the contemporary attributes crossing artistic boundaries, consistently resonating with the spirit of the times.

Within a short span of three years, the newly opened Iris Art Museum undergoes a transformative journey. Under the efforts of the post-90s museum director, Zhang Yunjia, the Iris Art Museum evolves from an educational museum into a comprehensive space. Based on their systematic collection, they have initiated projects such as “Untitled”. Located along a long embankment established in the late Qing Dynasty, it sets sail with the artistic winds.
