Last weekend, Christie’s held The Pioneers and Asian 20th Century & Contemporary Art Sales in Hong Kong, totalling USD 87.7 million. The top lot of the sale was Sanyu’s “Chrysanthemums in a Glass Vase” painted in the 1950s, which achieved a global auction record for a still life by the artist. With 87% sold by lot, the average lot value in The Pioneers sale exceeded USD 3 million, demonstrating intense demand for artistic masterpieces. Furthermore, four new world auction records were set for the iconic artists, Chu Teh-Chun, Lin Fengmian, Atsuko Tanaka and Anita Magsaysay-Ho. Fierce bidding in the room, on the phone and online witnessed a strong and healthy market for Modern & Contemporary Asian art. All results can be viewed here.
