Earlier this month, Fashion Group International of Dallas honored Kenny Goss and his sister-in-law Joyce Goss as Art Patrons of the Year, stating that the two have “reinvigorated the Dallas art world through their work at The Goss-Michael Foundation”. Evolved from the art collection of Kenny Goss and late George Michael, The Goss-Michael Foundation has provided a forum for British contemporary art by presenting various exhibitions and programs. Besides widely collecting works by various Young British Artists, Kenny Goss has also become good friends with Tracey Emin, Marc Quinn and Sir Michael Craig-Martin, to name just a few.
Larry’s List is very glad to have Kenny Goss to share his story and vision of his collection and foundation.

Collecting

What made you want to start collecting art?
I became great friends with many of the YBAs (Tracey Emin among many others) and then began collecting their works.

What is the main motivation behind your collecting?
I have always loved history and the history of art. Two of my favorite pieces are “Madame X” and “The Execution of Lady Jane Gray.”

When did you first fall in love with a piece of art?
When I first began visiting museum in London. What was it? (See above)

What is it that makes you become most interested in British contemporary art?
I became great friends with many of the YBAs (Tracey Emin among many others) and then began collecting their works.

Which Young British Artist(s) is/are your favourite if you can name it?
The YBA group. It is impossible to name just one.

Do you also collect some younger emerging British artists?
If yes, who is it and why do you think he or she is interesting to watch?
One of the artists I’ve been following is Eddie Peake. I like the versatility of his work.

Is there any particular type of art that has consistently attracted you (like videos, mixed media art, paintings), or anything that unites all the works you have acquired?
What unites The Goss-Michael Collection is that the art is from British artists, especially contemporary and emerging artists.

How many artworks do you own?
Personally, I own a number of pieces. However, The Goss-Michael Collection contains approximately 500 pieces of art.

How many are displayed at home and in your foundation respectively?
Home = 25;
Goss-Michael Foundation = Varies from exhibition to exhibition. Anywhere from 20 to 50 at a time.

What is your most treasured artwork in your private collection? And in the collection at the foundation?
There are so many that I love, but a few specifics are Tracey Emin – “Hurricane” painting; Damien Hirst “St Sebastien”; Bridget Riley – “Songbird”; Mark Quinn – “Sky’; Sir Michael Craig-Martin – “Handcuffs”

How important is it for you to meet the artists who created the artwork in person? Which artists have become your good friends?
It’s always important to know the artists and their techniques. Studio visits are a regular part of my schedule. Good friends include Tracey Emin, Marc Quinn and Sir Michael Craig-Martin, to name just a few.
